General Info
“What I hear, I forget; what I see, I remember; what I do, I understand”.

The focus of the Children’s Safety Village is “doing” - where the children not only receive a
classroom lecture, but have the opportunity to practice what they have learned in a hands-on
environment, in a realistic setting.

The Safety Village operates on a first come, first served basis. The program is designed for two
grade levels to attend at one time; one will visit the fire education center and the other will visit
the police education center. The Village can accommodate approximately 30 students per class.
Both Fire and Police Programs runs simultaneously which allows for the school to fill a bus to capacity
and save on transportation costs.

Classes are booked in March for the following school year and teachers are notified of their dates to
attend the Village well in advance.

All classes taught at the Safety Village are 70 minutes in length and contain classroom instruction
followed by a hands-on application of the lessons taught.

The Children’s Safety Village is fully accessible to all children including children with special needs.

two groups. One group drives battery operated jeeps throughout the Village, practicing the rules of
the road while the other group is taken on a walking tour to practice pedestrian safety and spot
safety messages within the Village. Students receive information on identifying emergencies, community helpers and calling 9-1-1. The students switch places after approximately

Fire Education
March – June

The program includes instruction on 9-1-1, smoke alarm awareness, preparing and practicing a fire
escape plan, and cooking safety. The Hazard House and videos are used to reinforce these valuable
and life saving messages. Students are then brought into Sparky’s Apartment. This interactive
teaching component brings life to the lessons they have been taught in the classroom. In Sparky’s
Kitchen students are taught about kitchen safety and hazard identification. The students are then
moved into Sparky’s Bedroom where they learn about the hazards of smoke and learn to check their
bedroom doors for heat. They are then exposed to a simulated fire situation and are taught how to
escape from a second floor window using a fire ladder.

            Internet Safety
Internet Safety
December – March

Students receive a classroom lecture on Staying Safe on the Internet. The presentation is interactive
and in addition to providing instruction to the students allows the teachers/parents/educators
present to hear what the students are being exposed to at home and at school on Internet sites
and chat rooms. A video on “Safe Surfing” is viewed after which students are put to the test.
Students are then partnered up, broken into teams and assigned a team name. Through the use of
an interactive video game system, Learnstar, student teams participate in a challenge and are tested
on their “on-line” knowledge.
