The Facts
Injury is the leading cause of death among Canadian children - killing more children annually than
all other causes of death combined. Every eight hours another child dies.

Preventable, traffic-related injuries are the leading cause of death in children aged one to 10.

In Canada a home fire is reported every 35 minutes -- with annual costs of more than $10 billion
and deaths of hundreds of people.

Burns due to fire and hot liquids happen in the place that should be safest for children - the home.
50% of boys will play or experiment with fire at least once during childhood or adolescence.

That’s why the Waterloo Region Children’s Safety Village (CSV) exists – to help minimize the threats
to the safety and well-being of our most precious resource… our children.

Centrally-located at 200 Maple Grove Road, in Cambridge, Ontario, the Village stands on 2.5 acres
of land directly behind Waterloo Regional Police Headquarters.

The CSV educates more than 25,000 students in Grades1-6 each year...and there is absolutely no
cost to the students of Waterloo Region who attend.

The CSV is also open to the public three times per year:

Each May, the CSV opens its doors to approximately 3,000 guests at the annual “open house”
of Police Headquarters during Police Week.

In September, the CSV participates in the Police Antique Car Show.

And, each December, the CSV celebrates “Christmas in the Village” -- an event that draws more
than 1,000 participants to enjoy the festivities of the Christmas Season. Adults and children
alike attend to see Santa, the Grinch, and to walk the streets of the Village under the glow of
Christmas lights. Local children’s choirs provide the entertainment. Later, everyone warms up with
hot chocolate and goodies while participating in arts, crafts, face painting and relaxing with some
children’s videos.
